Must see:
Take a trip to the perfectly preserved Greco-Roman theatre at Taormina, with Mount Etna looming menacingly in the distance.

Must eat at:
Ristorante Duomo in Ragusa sounds Italian to the bone – and it is, with compliments and accolades aplenty to accompany its price tag. Go for a thoroughly fresh take on superb Italian flavours.

Must be there for:
The Acireale Carnival (in 2009 between 7 and 14 February) is one of the island’s finest, with the full mix of processions, re-enactments and live music.

Well-travelled tips:
- Look closely down the teeming side streets of Sicily’s cities – Catania, Messina and Palermo – for hidden churches, piazzas and fountains you won’t always find in the guidebooks.
- Venture to the north of Sicily and spend a day (or three) on the beautiful Aeolian Islands of Lipari, Stromboli and Vulcano and more – which are all small but rather attractive.

Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to visit Italy.
