Commanding the Eastern edge of the Aegean, it’s home to Wonders of the World, ancient and modern. Bustling markets, perfectly preserved Medieval towns and beach resorts abound – including the infamous Faliraki – but inland mountains and forests are a world away.

Must see:
Get your walking shoes on and hit the streets. Although the original Colossus of Rhodes is long gone (since 224BC, in fact), the Medieval Town of Rhodes City is a modern day World Heritage Site.
Must eat at:
Ambrosia in Lindos is a smart and contemporary spot to come for lunch or dinner. Purposefully spacious – there are just 12 tables – you’re guaranteed plenty of attention.
Must be there for:
Rhodes City bursts to life on the last Sunday in May when a spectacular Flower Parade marks the official start of summer, complete with floats and flowered-up locals. It’s still technically off-season, so if you go, you won’t have to do battle with many other visitors for the best views.
Well-travelled tips:
- Crusader Castle is, as the name suggests, an imposing place to visit. It’s been standing guard over the island for centuries and dates back to the time of knights.
- Only the athletic should attempt to climb the island’s main peak, Mount Attavyros – and not in mid-summer. It will take between 2 and 3 hours to scale its 1215 metres, so it’s not for the faint-hearted
